This Food Strategy will help supercharge your Metabolism

Metabolism, crudely speaking, is the process where we turn what we eat and drink into energy for the body. If we consume more than we expend, we gain weight. The opposite is also true.

Moreover, there is a huge amount of variability amongst us all when it comes to our metabolism. Factors beyond our control such as our biological sex and age play a part. That said, our Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), which is the amount of calories needed to keep the body functioning at rest, is very difficult to influence, despite it being the largest drain on energy (60-80%).

At Your Daily Dose, we have taken into planning a food strategy that can affect factors that are within our direct control.

Food Strategy:

  1. Energy (food) is broken up into macronutrients - protein, carbohydrates and fat. We need ALL 3 in our food in order for our minds and bodies to function well.

  2. Each macronutrient has a particular function in our body in terms of ALL our daily activities. As such, it is important for us to take into account what our daily activities are in order to determine for the macronutrients you need in order to function and perform better.

  3. Meal plans are customized according to the macronutrients you need to achieve your nutrition and fitness goals. Not following  your recommended portioning and/or your meal plan could lead to a less efficient metabolism and bodily function, and may result in slower weight loss, slow muscle building, and slow burning of fat.

Your food should also take into account the thermic effect of food. Thermic effect of food (TEF) is the amount of energy needed to break down food during digestion. Protein requires the most amount of energy to break down during digestion (at 20-35% of energy consumed), as compared to fats and carbohydrates (both 5 to 15% of energy consumed). A simple change of protein in your diet will lead to an increase in your metabolism and fat burning.
